Pit Bulls vs. Politicians and the Media

Pit Bulls have a bad reputation. They are seen by many as dangerous dogs. They are outlawed in some areas. The word “pit bull” is an ambiguous term. It comprises many breeds and cross breeds. The American Pit Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, the Bull Terrier, etc. and any cross breeds…as well as others. The Am-Staff is of prime concern.  This is more than silly. And politicians are more than silly buying into this.

Pit bulls have 10,000 pounds of pressure in their jaws. No. Pit bulls jaws can lock onto something without letting go. No.

Dr. Brady Barr of National Geographic tested the bite strength of pit bulls as compared to other dogs. The average PSI (per square inch) bite strength of a domestic dog is 320 PSI.

He compared pit bulls with rottweilers and German shepherds. The pit bull came in third.

Pit bulls have a recent history of maulings. Why would this be?

Pit bulls have been historically used in dog fighting. Gang members and thugs love the reputation of owning one. Often, these dogs are left alone, chained in a yard with little or no human interaction. Any dog under those conditions could be dangerous.

Petey, of the “Our Gang Comedies” or “The Little Rascals” movies was a pit bull. Pit bulls are known as “nanny dogs” due to the love they show to children and the defense of those kids they will always provide.

When a pit bull can be targeted in a mauling, the media is there to promote its’ agenda. A false agenda…but it gets ratings. As such, politicians follow suit.

The nastiest breed of dog I’ve encountered is the Chihuahua. It isn’t likely to kill you, but it can sure mess up your socks.

  1. Agree.
Pit bulls are friendly, kind, loyal and calm but mostly misunderstood.
I have have heard people refer to Hilary Clinton as a Pit Bull. Actually she has nothing in common with a Pit Bull with the exception of her breath. I understand dirty money smells like milk bone dog treats.

    Good luck with your blog.
